Holy crap, it’s been 3 months. Anyway, here’s what I’ve been up to…
In December I started working on this weird punk record with an officer in the Canadian Navy. He wrote all the music and I ended up behind the drum kit. It’s almost done, but I haven’t heard from him in a while so maybe he’s out at sea. ?
I tracked 4 songs with The Chantrelles - a killer soul group out of Victoria. We recorded everything live off the floor including the lead vocal - with no headphones. 7 musicians on 8 tracks. Get stoked on this one!
Right before Christmas I had the usual trouble makers in the band KHBR up here making a new record.
And then right after Christmas I had Cascadia from Vancouver here for one day. We recorded and mixed 4 songs for a new 7”. Listen to a track here.
January was busy too. Mixed a couple trippy records by Moths & Locusts (Nanaimo) and White Poppy (Vancouver). Also recorded and mixed the new NEEDS record and the new Handsome Distraction album.
Almost forgot about our LIVE OFF THE NOISE FLOOR series featuring Fist City (Lethbridge), Bash Brothers, Teledrome (Calgary) and War Baby. All bands recorded live in the studio in front of the other bands. Lots of cool video filmed as well! Here’s some photos…

So far in February I’ve been working on albums with DOVE (Vancouver) and Capital Region (Victoria). The rest of the month belongs to The Mohawk Lodge. Looking forward to working on this new album!
In March I’m working with War Baby (Vancouver) and Zen Mystery Fogg (Courtney), but still have lots of time available. Get at me for dates!
Whatup Internet… It’s been a busy few months at the studio. I’ve been working with some really rad people/bands lately Dove Boniface from Vancouver was here in August making a new LP with me. Pick your favourite John Hughes soundtrack and get ready to replace it with this. Lots of 80’s inspired drum and synths sounds. Can’t wait for people to hear this.
Tough Mitts from Victoria were here in September working on 5 songs for their debut EP. It’s an incredible mix of goth, industrial, pop, rock and weirdo shit. 808’s and microkorg everywhere. I’ve never spent so much time creating unique reverbs from scratch. Check out the song “The Rules” in the Music section.
I mixed and mastered a new album from Balacade out of Victoria in October. The record was recorded and performed entirely be Andrew Reynolds in his jam space. He brought the tracks up here to gain some perspective and get some fresh ears on the album. Check out the video below for the song “Marigold”. The whole album is available at balacade.bandcamp.com
Also picked up where I left off with Wars. We now have 15 songs mixed and ready to be mastered. 90’s pop/punk alternative from Vancouver at its best.
Had The Courtneys over from Vancouver here in early November. We tracked 8 songs in 2 days and I’m in the middle of mixing this now. Goodbye for nowww!
Also put up a new Babysitter song in the Music player. The congas are mixed low only because I “played” them.

The latest Mohawk Lodge I mixed in January is now available from White Whale Records. Some of the bands strongest material yet!
This LIVE album I recorded during the Vancouver Olympics is now online for your listening pleasure.

10 Riot Songs offers a set of covers of classic punk rock songs that engage with punk’s past as a possible, if idealized, sub-cultural expression of generalized discontent and politicized anger (responses provoked for many by the events of the 2010 Olympic games).
Riot Songs pays tribute to the bands DOA, Stiff Little Fingers, Subhumans, Dead Kennedys, Fear, Circle Jerks, Stiffs, The Rezillos, The Clash, and The Dils.
Riot Songs is made up of Kathy Slade (vocals), Brady Cranfield (drums), Chris Harris (vocals/guitar), Christa Min (guitar), and Richard Trawick (bass).
Been having a great summer working with some talented folks from all over the Island and Vancouver.
Finished up the new BABYSITTER record which should be out by the end of the year. It’s their first full length LP featuring 13 of their best songs taken from their tape series. We did it over 6 days - 3 recording & 3 mixing. Mixed down to 1/4” 2 track at 15ips. It has some great thru effects because of age and improper storage of the tape. It fits in with their aesthetic. Favourite moments making this album include tracking a song in the garden and recording 1/2 speed cymbal swells.
I worked with NORTHCOTE, (Matt Goud) on 4 songs in preparation for a new album. He performed everything himself - acoustic / electric guitars, bass, drums and vocals. He loved the sound of the room so everything was distant mic’d. Hope to add a tune to the player eventually.
Started mixing the MOTHS & LOCUTS album we started a while back. Having a blast mixing this psych rock band.
Mastered a bunch of new albums for AHNA, JUVENILE HALL, KOBAN and RANDOM CUTS - all awesome bands from Vancouver.
I’m also working on a solo record with Matthew Friesen of Teapot Hill at the moment. It’s an 80’s dance record that currently sounds somewhere in between Tears For Fears and New Order. Having fun playing some guitar and synth stuff on this record.
The DYEING MERCHANTS album and MOHAWK LODGE record that I worked on this year are now out and about. Available for streaming somewhere out there…..
Suicide Squeeze is proud to announce the signing of the Vancouver-based band, Peace. The band is offering a taste with the new MP3, “Your Hand In Mine” (See Spin debut July 31).
Listen/Post “Your Hand In Mine” MP3
Peace recorded its sophomore LP in Pamela Anderson’s hometown, a fogged-in hamlet named Ladysmith on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The World is Too Much With Us builds on the depth and drama latent in Peace’s sound. Connor’s bass-lines menace and hypnotize. Mike’s guitar solos explode suddenly in wah-pedal freak-outs. Geoff’s tom-toms thud with a tribal intensity. And Dan’s lyrics, for which he’s been referred to as Vancouver’s “post-punk poet laureate”, alternate between images of defiant despair and love-sick yearning. The album caught the attention this summer of Suicide Squeeze Record’s David Dickenson, who signed the band not long after. He’ll be releasing The World Is Too Much With Us worldwide on October 16, 2012. Catch Peace on tour across North America that same month, as they hit the road seeking fame and fortune — or something equally absurd.

Since it opened its doors in July 2010, Ladysmith, BC recording studio the Noise Floor has become an oft-used getaway for BC bands looking to combine a Vancouver Island vaycay with a top-notch studio session. Engineer Jordan Koop and studio manager Terry Stewart have now collected the cream of the crop for the promotional comp Garden Party.
While the 18-song set features a handful of previously released material from garage rockers Babysitter, post-hardcore quintet Womankind and a track off pop punks Needles//Pins’ new 12:34 LP, there are a couple of exclusives on the collection too. For instance, check out Frog Eyes protégé Himalayan Bear’s “The Scent of Memory,” recorded live in the studio, and Slam Dunk side-project Bankrobber’s self-titled debut tune.
